Exports from Central Visayas up 23% in first quarter to nearly $1B

EXPORTS in Central Visayas during the first quarter of the year increased by 23 percent to $943.98 million from $770.706 million a year ago.

According to a document furnished Sun.Star by Philexport-Cebu, electronics still topped the list of export winners, accounting for 42.83 percent of the region’s total exports.

Other export winners were electrical equipment, other industrial goods, furniture, metal products, gifts, toys and houseware, processed foods and garments.

For the first time since 2000, bulk ship-builder Tsuneishi Heavy Industries (Cebu) Inc. (THI), located in Balamban, Cebu was among the region’s top five exporters.

Per Abraham, site manager of IUM Ship Management Co., earlier said the global demand for bulk carriers had been increasing due to China’s economic boom.

Bulk carriers are needed to ship cement, iron and other industrial materials to China, he said.

IUM acquires ships from THI.

The region’s other top exporters were Cebu Mitsumi, manufacturer of computer peripherals and electronic components, Pentax-Cebu, inkjet cartridge manufacturer Lex-mark (Philippines) International and Teradyne Philippines.

Some 15.2 percent of Region 7’s exports went to Japan. The United States, the region’s top export market last year only acquired some 10.4 percent of CV’s exports. The rest of the exports went to Hong Kong, Belgium, China and the United Kingdom.

Meanwhile, Central Visayas’ share in the country’s total exports in value last year was 9.48 percent from 8.83 percent a year ago. JBN
