Bacolods hit cousin’s filing of charge vs. Devinadera By Mia E. Abellana Sun.Star Staff Reporter
JAIME Bacolod, who acted as the complainant against Cedrick Devina-dera, was Alona Bacolod-Ecleo’s first-degree cousin.
Their fathers were brothers who joined the Philippine Benevolent Missionaries Association (PBMA) about the same time.
But upon learning that their cousin filed the complaint against Devinadera, Alona’s younger brothers Ricky and Angelito were surprised, saying they were not even close.
“Moadto siya sa among balay sa una. Pero pagkamatay ni Ate (Alona), wala na siya muduol namo (He used to visit us at home. But since Alona died, we have not seen him),” Angelito told Sun.Star.
They do not even know his age, but said he must be at least 40 years old.
Jaime did not inform the siblings that he was going to file the case against Devinadera.
Devinadera was convicted last May 7 of being an accessory to the murder of Alona, some five months after he surrendered in General Santos City and confessed that he had a hand in the crime. He also said it was Ben who had killed Alona.
But there was no way for Ben to defend himself. He was shot dead in June 2002, on the same night
Ecleo was arrested in Dinagat Island, Surigao del Norte.
Ricky said yesterday that Jaime seemed to be the only Bacolod left in Dinagat Island, as most of their relatives left the PBMA when his parents and two elder siblings were massacred in Subangdaku, Mandaue City.
Their cousins are now living in Surigao City.
Instead of sympathizing with them, Jaime chose to be loyal to their brother-in-law, PBMA supreme master Ruben Ecleo Jr., who is facing a parricide charge for Alona’s death, the brothers said.
The Bacolod brothers added that Jaime escorts Ecleo’s siblings and his mother, Rep. Glenda Ecleo, around Dinagat Island, where the PBMA is based.
They said Jaime had no right to act as complainant as he was only a cousin while they are Alona’s brothers.
They are also disappointed with the development, saying this could affect the parricide case against Ecleo.
“Nalawgaw na gyud ang among kaso ani,” Angelito said, shaking his head.
