CIDG seizes 7 posh vehicles
THE Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) 7 yesterday confiscated seven right-hand-drive (RHD) vehicles from a new garage on A.S. Fortuna St., Mandaue City, and arrested two men, including a barangay councilor.
The seven vehicles are worth about P2.5 million.
According to Senior Insp. Germano Mallari, they received a report that RHD vehicles were to be transported between 11 p.m. Tuesday and 2 a.m. yesterday.
Check
They went to check the information and about midnight, they saw a three-door Mitsubishi Pajero drive out of a yard on its way to Talamban.
Mallari and his team blocked the Pajero and confirmed their suspicions that it was an RHD vehicle.
To make a follow-up, they recovered six more RHD vehicles inside the yard.
Headquarters
A Toyota Prado, two Toyota Corollas, two Nissan Sentras and an Isuzu Big Horn were confiscated and brought to the CIDG 7 headquarters in Camp Sotero Cabahug on Gorordo Ave.
Importing, operating and registering RHD vehicles is prohibited under Republic Act (RA) 8506.
Arrested were the Pajero’s driver Jerson Chan and the yard caretaker, Renato Pacaña, a barangay councilor of Tisa, Cebu City.
Chan declined to talk to reporters, but Pacaña admitted that they only recently opened the garage.
Owner Rowena Deja-resco will also face the charge along with Chan and Pacaña for violation of RA 8506.
Pacaña said the garage was opened just two weeks ago and that they have not yet been able to set-up properly.
The vehicles were imported from Japan.
Though he knew it was illegal to import RHD vehicles, Pacaña, who reportedly has a special power of attorney for the yard, said it was the first time he engaged in such a business. MEA
