Mayor hits Sonny for sacrificing son for political career

NOW that Sen. John “Sonny” Osmeña lost in the senatorial race, Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña is sorry for his nephew John Henry “John-john” Osmeña for having been made a sacrificial lamb by his father.

Mayor Osmeña said he was stunned that his cousin junked his son John-john, who ran for Cebu governor, at the last minute to support Celestino “Junie” Martinez Jr. instead.

He said he was already appalled when Ribomapil Holganza Sr. asked his son Rico Rey “Koko” Holganza “to fight his battle for him” in the 2001 polls.

Ribomapil and former mayor Alvin Garcia, staunch critics of Osmeña, asked Rico Rey to run for Cebu City vice mayor in 2001 against incumbent Vice Mayor Michael Rama, Osmeña’s runningmate.

“But Sonny is worse. He used his son as a sacrificial lamb for his own political ambitions. He dumped John-john at the last minute so he can save his senatorial candidacy,” the mayor said.

In a news conference yesterday, Osmeña said he only has one message for his cousin on his defeat in politics: “You asked for it, you got it.”

“I can’t think of anyone in history who would sacrifice your own son, your only child. That shows you how dangerous Sonny is. He’s very dangerous because he goes beyond what values we treasure,” the mayor added.

“I’m really stunned. A mother bear will even die for the baby bear but this time, nabali gyud. Tanan gyud nabali,” he said.

After Sonny threatened that Osmeña would soon be sorry for his criticisms against the senator, the mayor said he will just have to do his best in the next three years.

Sonny had warned that he will be looking over Tomas’s shoulder and keep a close watch on “all the mayor’s anomalies.”

There were also talks that President Arroyo might appoint the Cebua-no senator to an important position in the National Government.

In reaction, the mayor said he will just hope that the President will realize that he (Sonny) is not respected by his constituents in Cebu.

“He’s very vindictive, he will come up with a vengeance. So I will just have to do the best I can under the circumstances,” said the mayor. LCR
