Speak out: Barking up the wrong tree By Invicto C. Alcantara Dalaguete, Cebu
The Department of Education (DepEd) is apparently barking up the wrong tree when it required pupils/students to undergo the High School Readiness Test (HSRT) “to measure their grasp of English, Science and Mathematics, in order to address the learning gap of high school entrants in these three subjects.”
Is it not a fact that one cannot dish out what one does not possess?
If teachers/instructors themselves are very much wanting in written and oral proficiencies particularly in English, should not DepEd have required these teachers themselves to undergo readiness tests to find out who are the culprits in the miseducation of our pupils/students?
(Most teachers have not developed the habit of reading newspapers, magazines, and much less books.)
Now, here’s my personal observation. Some teachers spell believe as beleive, river as revir, sightings as citings, buntings as bantings. They pronounce baggage as bagage. They construct such a sentence as, “This is belong.”
These are, to say the least, not funny but tragic.
So, why does not DepEd instead require these teachers to undergo readiness tests. Or let them, during district meetings, develop in at least 100 words such topics as: What IT or BEC are all about?
Note their spelling and grammar and you will find yourself rolling with laughter. These are the teachers who should instead be enrolled in the Bridge Program. So why pick on the pupils?
And, yes, our teacher education schools too, should be looked into.
