Alcoseba bares broad sports plan

BEING the veteran basketball coach who never goes to a game unprepared, newly-elected Cebu City Councilor Raul “Yayoy” Alcoseba revealed his plans once he wins the chairmanship of the City Council’s sports committee.

Already in the portfolio of Alcoseba are plans for an extensive program for all priority sports down to the sitio level and the revival of professional boxing in the city.

On July 1, he will seek the votes of his colleagues at the City Council for the chairmanship of the sports committee against current committee chairman Sylvan “Jack” Jakosalem.

Alcoseba’s plans include tapping the Philippine Basketball Association to participate in a grassroots basketball program and the creation of a Sports Foundation that could benefit not only the sports sector but the education sector as well.

“In fact right now I have a draft proposal to the PBA seeking their support for our program. And they should be involved because Cebu is second to Manila in terms of consumption of their products,” Alcoseba told Sun.Star Cebu.

With the sports committee likely to go to his office, Alcoseba is going to conduct a series of seminars and clinics for coaches and trainers coming from the barangays.

“What I want is a comprehensive development program down to the sitio level. As of now the Sports Commission has not come up with a concrete program for the baranggays. There are existing inter-baranggay tournaments but that will change under me. I want to train coaches, trainers and officials down to the sitio level. Teach them how to coach and train so that they can impart these to their areas,” said Alcoseba.

Alcoseba also hopes to improve existing sports facilities around the city.

“I’m not talking about basketball alone,” said Alcoseba. “There will be improvements to existing facilities and repairs on venues.

“As of now, not a lot of games can be held in barangay sports centers. The implementation of the budget should be channeled down to the baranggays.”

However, since his plans cannot rely mainly on the budget from the City coffers, Alcoseba is thinking ways to involve NGOs and private corporations for their assistance.

“That is why I am also planning to create a sports foundation, where we can seek funds or even goods from NGOs, Filipinos abroad and private corporations because we cannot rely on the budget from the City Government alone.”
