Guardo upset over Team Cebu’s poor finish
CEBU City Sports Commissioner Jonathan Guardo is disappointed with the sixth-place finish of Team Cebu City in the just-concluded Smart & Audionet Amazing Tour of Cebu.
“I expected them to beat Danao, if not then maybe finish within the top three,” said Guardo before the start of the CCSC’s weekly press conference at the Cebu City Sports Center.
The team is composed of triathlete Mylene Jarina, adventure racer Nogie Biagan, and cyclists Lloyd and Mark Debalucos and managed by Niño Abarquez.
However, Guardo admitted that the Smart Tour, which mostly involves mountainbiking, isn’t really suited for the team, as they are more experienced in triathlon and adventure races.
“We will still support the team, it just wasn’t their specialty,” said Guardo. “If there was swimming involved in the Smart Tour, I’m sure they could have done better.”
Still, despite falling short of Guardo’s expectations, the team’s sixth-place finish in the grueling four-day tour is impressive enough considering they lacked preparation.
The event saw seven teams dropping out, some due to exhaustion. One racer, a member of the national team, who quit on the second day, told one of the support crews: “Anyone who can finish the race is amazing.” ML
