Lagman survives three-hour match, enters semis By Karla I. Paner Sun.Star Correspondent
JACOB Lagman survived a grueling three-hour match against Christian Paul Cabahug, 6-4, 7-6, 6-5, to barge into the semifinals of the 12-Under category in the 2004 Adidas Tennis Challenge at the Cebu Country Club yesterday.
The nine-year-old Lagman of St. Benedict’s Learning Center took the first set at 6-4 but the equally-skilled Cabahug forced a deciding set after winning a close second set, 7-6.
Jacob, the youngest of the tennis-playing Lagman brothers, was behind in the final set, 4-1, before getting back in the game with a huge rally.
Cabahug made a tricky point as the ball went just over the net to force an error on the chasing Lagman but the latter was consistent until he took the driver’s seat at 6-5.
Jacob finally took the set with a difficult shot that landed an inch from the line.
Earlier, Jacob eliminated Kim Peter Ayuda in the 10-Under Unisex, 6-0, 6-1, while top-seed Sally Mae Siso of Osaka Iridology and Dunlop advanced to the semis after battering Judell Arellano, 6-0, 6-0.
Pounded
In the 14-Under, top seed Julius Lagman broke into the semifinals after pounding Lowell Lloyd Cañete, 6-0, 6-1, while second-seed Francis Largo got closer to meeting Julius in the finals after finishing his quarterfinal assignment, 6-2, 6-0, over James Karl Cañete. Kennex Abadia, meantime, defeated Noelito Pacaña, 6-2, 6-2, to take his own semifinal seat.
Meanwhile, the eldest of the Lagman brothers, Julian, continued to sizzle as he conquered Larry Antigua, 6-3, 6-1, in the quarterfinals. He will clash with younger brother, Julius, in the next round after the latter successfully expelled Cayetano Olavidez III, 6-1, 6-1, in the 16-Under class.
Bobby Chio, on the other hand, easily earned another win after a 6-1, 6-0 conquest over Ryan Ocio while Janji Soquiño dropped Lawrence Bornes, 6-1, 6-2, the Boys 21-Under.
In the distaff side, Lovely Soquiño booted out regional top-seed Sallydine Siso, 6-0, 6-4, in the 14-Under class while Honey Mae Gilles advances to the next round today after routing Mary Mae Pepino, 6-0, 6-0.
