GMA to attend guv’s wedding anniversary

AFTER staying three nights here, President Arroyo will be back in Cebu on June 21 to serve as the only principal sponsor in the 50th wedding anniversary ceremony of Gov. Pablo Garcia and his wife, retired judge Esperanza Fiel-Garcia.

The governor’s daughter, Gwendolyn, disclosed that Arroyo already confirmed this to her during their talk in Carcar town, where the President visited an irrigation project.

The golden wedding ceremony of the governor, who is Lakas chairman in Cebu, will be held at the
Cebu Metropolitan Cathedral.

‘Woman’s world’

Gwendolyn, who is leading the gubernatorial race in the official partial count by the Provincial Board of Canvassers (PBOC), said Cebu may benefit from having a woman governor, considering that the President is also a woman.

“Having the same gender is an advantage because women know each other in a way only women know. It’s the value of sensitivity associated with women, and we have a common characteristic—we want to get things done, and done quickly. I’d like to think that we can work together,” Gwendolyn told reporters yesterday.

Near resolution

Both Gwendolyn and her closest rival, former congressman Celestino “Junie” Martinez Jr., are waiting for the Commission on Elections (Come-lec) in Manila to resolve the pre-proclamation controversies they lodged against each other.

Protests against certificates of canvass in 11 towns and three cities in Cebu were denied by the PBOC but both parties filed an appeal. The Comelec is yet to raffle these to any of its divisions.

Arroyo was in Cebu last Monday for rest and prayer amid the delayed canvassing of votes for the presidential and vice presidential elections at the joint session of Congress.

Aside from visiting projects and telling the secretary of the Department of Public Works and Highways to speed up work on the Cebu south road, she also met with local officials.

Plans have yet to be finalized but she is expected to deliver her inaugural speech in Cebu.
