Pardo, Camputhaw declared as calamity zones
SITTING silently in the gallery, stallholders who were victims of Tuesday dawn’s fire in Pob-lacion Pardo waited in anticipation for the Cebu City Council to give attention to their plight.
Their presence was rewarded by a special session held immediately after the regular session, where Barangays Poblacion Pardo and Camputhaw were declared calamity areas.
At least 45 stallholders were displaced when fire struck the Pardo public market around 2:55 a.m. last Tuesday.
Earlier, about 1:25 a.m., fire also razed eight houses in Camputhaw.
The stallholders, who arrived at the start of the regular session until the special session, broke into smiles when the council approved the two resolutions sponsored by Councilors Gerardo Carillo, George Rama, Jocelyn Pesquera and Sylvan Jakosalem.
Relief, rehab
The declaration will pave the way for City Hall to help the victims through relief and rehabilitation efforts.
The stallholders, who waited outside the session hall, thanked Carillo and Vice Mayor Michael Rama for not stalling their request until next week’s session.
During the special session, Rama acknowledged the need to immediately convene the council because giving the victims assistance “cannot wait.”
The councilors agreed that the fire victims in Camputhaw need food and material assistance.
The stallholders, on the other hand, needed assistance to “rehabilitate and rebuild their damaged stalls.”
Declaring the affected areas in a state of calamity was needed for the release of calamity funds to augment local funds in giving aid to the victims. RHM
