Oyson: RP boxers with 2 names
By Manuel N. Oyson Jr.

THE expose’ recently made by noted boxing analyst and sports commentator Quinito Henson of Philippine Star and which this corner also noted, pales in comparison to the latest scandal that may further shake the people’s faith in the Games and Amusements Board. Can you imagine, with or without the GAB’s knowing it until later, two Filipino boxers reportedly fought in Bangkok this week using fake names?

The sad part is that one of them used as his alias the name of Oriental-Pacific welterweight champion Rev Santillan to con the Thai promoters into allowing him to enter the ring as Santillan himself. Naturally, the pretender lost by unanimous decision to Sintung Kietbusaba, the reigning Pan-Asia Boxing Association welter titlist. As it turned out, Santillan II turned out to be No. 1 RP junior welter Nonoy Gonzales.

UN-REAL McCOY: And what was the excuse of international matchmaker Jun Sarreal, who admitted that it is true Gonzales fought in Thailand? That Gonzales never used Rev Santillan’s name. He also belied the article of a Thai journalist that appeared in the boxing website Fightnews.com about it. Something is really rotten here.

And it is not the salmon in Denmark, which I relished very much in its savory, natural flavor, when I vacationed there some years back. Not one but two Filipino boxers apparently passed themselves off as the real McCoy to earn their boxing trip to the Thailand capital.

SCHEME: The other pretender was Romualdo Mahinay. He borrowed the name of RP No. 7 super-feather Al Deliguer. Mahinay or “Deliguer” was decisioned by Fujimi Victorygym. Columnist Salven Lagumbay of CDN yesterday explained that the scheme was done to save the two boxers’ skin.

By using the name Santillan, Gonzales was hoping to conceal a defeat, which would put a stumbling block in his quest for the RP crown.

Something is really fishy here. If Sintung is also a champion (never heard of Pan-Asia Boxing before) and Santillan being the OPBF titleholder, their match should have been slated for the usual 12 rounds. He was not in Thailand last May 31, first of all. Did someone again pull the wool over the eyes of the GAB? Will it just close its eyes to this latest caper and pretend it never happened?
