Tracksters ‘beg’ no more By Mike T. Limpag Sun.Star Correspondent
The National Track Open Bound Cebu City field team has gone a long way since those times when they had to scout around for sponsors.
Cebu City Sports Commission head Jonathan Guardo is now backing them up.
“Before we had to beg for sponsors, or schools would conduct fundraising campaigns from June until the last week of classes for the event,” said TCC head Bernard Ricablanca, who also serves as the University of Cebu athletic director.
Tomorrow, Ricablanca will leave with a 23-member team for the 2004 International Invitational/National Track Open at the Ninoy Aquino Memorial Stadium on June 1 to 4.
No begging this time as Guardo has given them P124,000 for their boat fare and allowance, while UC has also given P1,200 each to their students who are part of the team.
The team will be hoping to better their 3-4-1 medal haul last year, which earned them a third place finish, since this year’s event will also serve as the selection process for the national team Local running sensation, Cristy Sevillano is aiming to duplicate her three medal finish last year with wins in the 10K and 5K run and a silver in the 3K run.
Juvilyn Ocariza will also try to defend her long jump title while hoping to better her silver medal finish in the heptathlon.
Other medalists last year who are back this year, are Sydney Ferrer who got a silver in high jump, Eduard Encontro who got bronze in decathlon, and Sandy Cahutay, silver in decathlon.
