Yap still unbeaten By Karla I. Paner Sun.Star Correspondent
THIRD-SEED Kim Steven Yap capitalized continued his hot performance to join seven others for the lead after three rounds in the National Age-Group Chess Championship in Mandaluyong City.
Yap outwitted Filipino-American Mahjohnde Roye with the Pelican variation of the Sicilian defense in the second round before yesterday morning before completing his unbeaten streak with a third-round victory over Joseph Velasco in the afternoon.
The University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) high-school standout joins top-seed Ivan Gil Biag and No.2 seed Vic Niel Villanueva, among others, with perfect slates in the Boys Under-16 of the competitions.
The other Cebu players, however, could not keep up with Yap’s pace as 16-year-old Therese Gonzales, playing in the tough Girls’ 18-Under, succumbed to her second straight setback in the second round before finally barging into the win column with a victory over Elydia Reyes in the third round.
After a successful first-day stint, Yves Christian Fiel lost two close matches yesterday, including a frustrating pawn ending against fourth-seed Jude Emil Fronda.
“The Manila opponents are very good because their parents really hired National Masters to personally train their kids,” said Fiel’s father Percy, who is accompanying the three Cebu players in Manila. “There are also weekly chess tournaments here in Manila.”
