Serna: Casting directors are ‘targeting’ Cebuano actors for future projects

It looks like casting directors are targeting Cebuano actors these days for their coming projects. Today is supposed to be the second day for an audition conducted for a project which action-drama actor Cesar Montano will star and direct.

The project is said to be tentatively (?) called Suba. Prospective actors are required to prepare a two-minute drama dialog for the audition. A colleague enticed yours truly to try but I declined. The reason? I’m basically shy! O-ha!

On the second and third day of next month, another project which, as sources say, will highlight the tourist spots around the province - will also hold auditions at the Cebu City Sports Center.

A cousin-in-law also inquired if I’m interested. My answer was in the negative for the same above mentioned reason. Isn’t it obvious? He-he!

A glance at the list of personalities that participated in the Santacruzan sa Carcar 2004, held two weeks ago, may already lure lovers of beauty to converge to the southern town’s church area and thoroughfares to watch the procession which is also held in almost all communities around the country in the last days of May.

Three beauty titleholders in the persons of Ms. Cebu 2002 Melanie Ediza, Miss Phils.-Air 2003 Natalie Tarin and Bb. Pilipina-World 2004 Karla Bautista lent their precious time and effort to appear as Reina de las Estrellas, Reina del Sol, and Reina Elena, respectively.

Melanie wore a Philip Rodriguez gown; Natalie, a Jed Sevilla design; and Karla, a Sal Malto creation, all eye-catching. Ms. Cebu 2004 Marnelli Abatayo and third runner-up Guia Chua also appeared as guests upon the invitation of the organizers.

We even learned that current darling of the music world Sheryn Regis was also asked to play an important role in the Santacruzan but the petite warbler politely turned it down due to an engagement she had already accepted much earlier. Dr. Phia Mancao, a Carcaranon herself, reined as Reina Emperatriz. The young and lovely Sagalas were also the town’s prized daughters.

Spearheaded by the St. Catherine of Alexandria Parish, in cooperation with the Carcar Heritage Conservation Society, the affair was aimed for a noble cause: the renovation of the church’s roof.

Artistic director Val Sandiego and publicity officer Jerry Martin Alfafara were in the midst of the flurry of activities. Their effort paid off as the affair was a huge success despite negligible flaws. It’s the first staging anyway.

Learning afterwards that the activity was hatched only two weeks prior to its staging drew admiration and awe from our side.

A heavy downpour after the last number of the cultural show that followed the later afternoon procession soaked most, if not all of the spectators. It was viewed by the parishioners as the patron saint’s and the Almighty’s approval of their worthy endeavor.

That early, many people were already optimistic that next year’s edition of the Santacruzan will be more colorful, star-studded and spectacular. By then, Carcar would not only be known for its takoy, ampaw, bucarillo, chicharon, pastilles and other mouthwatering delicacies but also for a lot more reasons (cultural and others).

The local government (which also supported the undertaking) and church officials have lots to thank for having industrious, aggressive, imaginative, and cooperative people in their area.

If indeed the controversial commercial series of a fastfood chain has been pulled out from the airlanes due to pressure from various sectors, yours truly would be one of those who’ll applaud.

The first time yours truly saw the ad showing a young man licking his burger and offering it to his friend afterwards immediately earned my adverse reaction plus the remark, “Yuck!”

The commercial, for sure, had recall but with the adverse reactions, yours truly wonders if that could be translated to sales and revenue. Replacing it with something more pleasant and non-offensive would do the company more good.
