Safety First nips Skygo; Mega Mix beats Hapee

WHILE General Feeds Mega Mix ended the three-game winning streak of Hapee Toothpaste, it was Safety First Drinking Water that went home with the night’s biggest victory following an upset over defending champion Skygo Motorcycle as the Bill Wong Cup opened Tuesday at the Guadalupe Sports Complex.

The Feeds Masters snapped the Teeth Sparklers’ streak following an 84-74 victory, while the Water Force handed the Ryders a 74-72 defeat.

Tuesday’s games officially started the five-team Bill Wong Cup, which includes the four teams competing in the Cebu Basketball Federation (CBF) Carrier Summer League and the visiting Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagles.

Mini tourney

The Bill Wong Cup, held in memory of the late team manager of Casino Rubbing Alcohol/Grachiya Energy Drink, is a short round-robin competition where the team with the most wins will be declared champion. The Skygo Ryders won the title last year after beating General Feeds via the quotient system.

Low production

However, CBF teams will carry over their record in this tournament to the Summer League, which will resume after the Bill Wong Cup.

Streak-shooter Marvin Tundag’s scoring silence and the anemic contributions of power forwards Egay Ignacio and Leodi Garcia caused the downfall of the Jun Noel-mentored Hapee, which is seeking its second regular conference title since winning the 2003 President’s Cup.

Meanwhile, Marphyl Limbo had a field day to lead Safety First Drinking Water to victory after dropping it first three starts.

With the excellent quarterbacking of veteran playmaker Ope Abellana and the inside presence of muscleman Rolly Menor, the Water Force left the Ryders most of the way.
