The Luna Collection in Cebu

The Luna collection an exhibit of Cebuano Contemporary Art features the works of Raymund L. Fernandez, Estela Ocampo-Fernandez, Palmy Pe-Tudtud, Roy Lumagbas and Christine E. Manguerra. The formal opening will be held June, 18, 6 p.m. to coincide with the inauguration of the new HSBC Cebu Branch.

The Lunâ Art Collection will be creating new installations and displaying works in progress. Arranged around the new branch’s well-appointed spaces are two- and three-dimensional works of art by members of Lunâ who are one of today’s leading Cebuano contemporary art groups.

At the center of the exhibition is the local dragon that has filled older generations of Cebuanos as well as the Visayans with rich lore and mysticism. Called Bakunawa, the local dragon is believed to appear during a lunar eclipse after it devours a crescent moon. Its representation in the Lunâ Art Collection installation Bakunawa will comprise of dyed patterned cloth representing the moving dragon’s body as its head merges into the moon that it is consuming. The Bakunawa is also the Visayan folklore’s symbol of change and transformation as the moon waxes and wanes.

The Lunâ Art Collection was organized in October 2000. Two months later the inaugural show “Munas Ginhawa” was mounted, and drew an appreciative crowd. Since then, the collective has been through many changes particularly in its shifts of membership and working spaces. In due course the group expanded its exhibition program that saw the number of its exhibits increase annually with eight shows last year.

These exhibits have featured the works of the collective and other artists who share their vision of presenting works that are substantial, fresh, and which broaden the boundaries of local art both in its making and appreciation. This goal is achieved not only through exhibitions but also through artists’ talks and discussions that follow every show opening and which have become the feature of the collective’s continuing development of the local dialogue on contemporary art.

As the exhibition coordinator, Ana Labrador created a shortlist of artists for this HSBC project in Cebu. Eventually Lunâ Art Collective was selected for its first visual art project in the city, citing the unusual attitude of this local art group towards their art making. “It is about time we look beyond Manila to find novel, innovative approaches to art,” she points out. “Lunâ’s members reveal and enrich in their work the connection of native practices and tradition with their contemporary visual interpretations. These Cebuano artists carry with them a vision that extends to an expansive worldview, making them successful in other artistic fields, including industrial design.

Cebu is teeming with ingenious energies and inspired artists. This HSBC project is one way of focusing on them”

“As the world’s local bank, HSBC recognizes the wealth of Cebu talent and is proud to support this ingenious group of local artists to promote a greater appreciation for their work among our customers and the public. We are proud to host the Lunâ Collective in our new branch and hope people will come and visit to view a sample of Cebuano creativity,” said Warner Manning, HSBC chief executive officer.

The Lunâ Collection: An Exhibit of Cebuano Contemporary Art is ongoing at the HSBC branch located at the Ground Floor, Taft Ayala Building, Cardinal Rosales Avenue, Cebu Business Park from 14-25 June 2004. The formal opening is scheduled on 18 June 2004 to coincide with the branch’s inauguration.
