A BASKETBALL referee shot dead a Mandaue City barangay councilor whom he caught with his (referee’s) wife aboard a motorcycle in Lapu-Lapu City Friday night.

Duty officer PO3 Wilson Salinas identified the gunman as Alejandro Alinsug Monilar, 48, of Sitio Camatis, Barangay Paknaan, Mandaue City.

Salinas said Tipolo Barangay Councilor Emma-nuel Estrera arrived in his newly rented place in Barangay Pajac, Lapu-Lapu City 7 p.m. Friday aboard his Suzuki motorcycle together with Benita Monilar.

‘Lying in wait’

Homicide Chief Geof-frey Baguio theorized that Monilar may have been already at the place waiting for them.

As soon as Estrera arrived with Benita, Monilar shot him. The councilor was hit in the left cheek and left arm, killing him instantly.

Except for minor scratches, Benita was not seriously hurt. Her husband fled right after the shooting.

The responding Special Weapons and Tactics team led by Senior Insp. Jonathan Pineda pursued the suspect until they reached his home, with the help of Benita’s relatives.

Arrested

They arrested Monilar and brought him to Lapu-Lapu City holding cell for detention.

Baguio said he is preparing murder charges because the suspect apparently planned the killing.

Estrera, 48, also a talent of ABS-CBN Cebu, reportedly rented the place in Barangay Pajac three days before he was shot dead.

The police found out that Monilar was a contract worker in Singapore. But he long ended his contract to be with his wife and four children.

TV actor

Estrera’s eldest daughter Maritess, 25, said her father became popular in his major role in ABS-CBN’s drama series “Matud Nila” and “Doble Kara.”

Estrera left his wife and five children, the youngest of whom is 15 years old.
