Cebu FA bids to host football in 2005 Seag

ONE city’s loss may be Cebu City’s gain.

After Bacolod City’s bid to become a satellite city for the 2005 Southeast Asian Games suffered a snag, the Cebu Football Association (CebuFA) is bidding to have football played here instead.

To be a satellite venue, a city must host five events and Bacolod already failed in this after the Philippine Southeast Asian Games Organizing Committee (Philsoc) decided not to grant Bacolod the hosting job for boxing and volleyball.

“We have a good chance because we already have six events scheduled here,” CebuFA president Jonathan “Maxi” Maximo said.

However, since Men’s football requires two stadiums, Maximo is thinking of having the games split between Cebu and Bacolod with the championship game to be played in either of the two cities.

One stadium

“We only have one stadium, and Jonathan (Guardo) likes the idea,” Maximo said.

Maximo is set to talk with Cebu City Sports Center chairman Jonathan Guardo to iron the details of the hosting job.

Among those set to be discussed is the long overdue rehabilitation of the football field at the Cebu City Sports Center.

“We really have to rehabilitate the football field at Abellana, because we will not have enough time to construct a new stadium at the SRP,” Maximo said.

The CebuFA president also said that the rehabilitation of the field will be a big boost to the local football scene as the City is set to hold national and local tournaments.

“It will not only be for the SEA Games but also for the Adidas Under-19, the local tournaments, and the Palarong Pambansa, which the city plans to host next year,” Maximo said. ML
