SC-SIT bags third place in MLKP basketball tournament

LYLE Antipuesto carried Salazar Colleges of Sciences and Institute of Technology-Sunsport past the favored University of the Southern Philippines-Sinners and Saints, 83-79, in the battle for third of the 2004 M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala Inter-School Developmental Basketball Tournament at the Cebu Coliseum.

Antipuesto scored 16 points, including a five-point run in the closing seconds that totally took USP out of the game.

Romel Lawas, who finished with 16 points for SC-SIT, had a consistent first half but his team trailed, 42-47.

SC-SIT took the lead at 77-76 before Antipuesto knocked in a booming trey followed by two pressure-packed free-throws to haul the Sunsport-backed squad to an 82-76 lead with 30 seconds to play.

USP-Sinners and Saints scored on a fastbreak on the other end but it proved to be their last surge as Wilfredo Orbeta iced SIT’s victory after splitting it from the stripe in the final 10 seconds.

“I’m really happy and proud of my boys. We didn’t expect to reach this far. Placing third in this tournament is a big achievement for us,” said SC-SIT head coach Jojo Romarate.

Romarate also thanked Andrew Choachuy for his support to the team, whose members are mostly graduates of the Sunsport Basketball Training Camp.

Earvin Ferraren unloaded a game-high 19 points, while Frans Dionne Dysam and Meldjan Reed chipped in 10 apiece for USP.
