Thursday, August 12, 2004 Speak out: Again, south road traffic By Nicanor A. Enriquez Carcar, Cebu
This is to call again the attention of President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo to the festering agony of southern Cebu residents regarding the monstrous traffic jams on our highways.
Three years ago, the trip from Cebu City to Carcar by car would normally take one hour. Nowadays, it is two times longer and even more during rush hours.
The main choke points are in the vicinity of major bridges being constructed to replace the pre-war ones. These are located in the Carcar-San Fernando boundary, San Fernando, and Naga.
Recently they are tinkering with the solid Perrelos-Valladolid bridge looking for structural defects.
Maintenance of our highways defies rhyme and reason. Good roads are repaired under the guise of “road improvement.” Well-paved highways are destroyed by giant jackhammers and replaced with a layer of inferior concrete.
Have our highways become the favorite milking cow of some public officials?
Whether GMA can fast track the completion of these road repairs and bridge constructions remains a puzzle.
