Thursday, August 12, 2004 Oyson: More e-mail By Manuel N. Oyson Jr. Counter punch
IF I were still with the Commission on Elections, I would by now be facing a number of administrative complaints for violation of the code of conduct and ethical standards for public officials and employees (R. A. 67l3), requiring a response or reply within 15 days to letters and correspondence that have been sent to them.
I must admit that indeed I have been remiss in answering some of my readers lately. Did you know that my e-mail Inbox was flooded with a total of 177 messages in the last two months? Mostly spams cluttered my computer. From one who may be a spammer, and who signs himself as “Karlos” I received 19 cryptic messages.
CORRECTION. A few richly deserve some answers. Though this may be late in the day to talk about them, let me just cite a few readers’ feedbacks which are as fresh as the day they were sent. Charles Timoteo Su confesses that he is a regular reader of Counterpunch.
“I really think you are one of the better sports analysts/columnists around,” Mr. Su wrote. Thanks for the plug, Charles. He corrects an earlier column, “LA played like a two-man team.”
(6/17/004-SSC) He points out that the name of the Detroit Pistons’ point guard is Lindsay Hunter, not Leslie.
DETROIT FAN. Ben Wallace, not Rasheed Wallace, has the Don King hairdo. Rasheed Wallace was the fifth starter with double digits in Detroits’ 100-87 thrashing of the Los Angeles Lakers in Game 5 for the NBA title. Charles admits to being an avid Detroit Pistons fan.
James Tan furnishes me a copy of an e-mail he sent to our Chicago-based correspondent Homer Sayson. His piece, rather long, is full of invectives against Homer. James said that the Los Angeles Lakers and their fans “deserved to be humbled”.
HERE’S ELY. Again, here’s Claire Guinto or Ely Araneta, whose letter I printed here earlier congratulating Raul “Yayoy” Alcoseba on his election to the Cebu City Council. Ely was a high-school classmate of Chief Justice Hilario G. Davide Jr. and a former player of the USP Panthers under Doc Alviola. He writes again expressing his sentiments on the Cebu Coliseum management be able to fix the Coliseum on time for the PBA All-Star Game. I will check tomorrow before the PBA presscon at Waterfront Hotel-Lahug if the electronic scoreboard has already been fixed.
Ely said that should this be done Cebu can pride itself with a presentable and enjoyable arena where customers are satisfied and enjoy what they pay for.
He said he may be here this month to witness the transformation of the Cebu Coliseum and to watch the PBA games. He gives his address as 1043 Congress Drive, Bartlett, Illinois, USA. Oh, yes, he reads my column regularly.
OBIT. This corner expresses its deep condolence to Sambag 2, Cebu City Barangay Capt. Noel Wenceslao on the death of his father, Eleuterio. His remains lie in state at the San Vicente Ferrer Parish of Sambag 2. He will be buried on Sunday at the Cebu Memorial Park after a 2 p.m. mass in the same place.
QUOTE OF THE DAY: “If anything, GMA’s ‘rescue’ of this latest setback was just a short-term reprieve for the station.” – Sports columnist Michael Angelo Murillo of Business World on the President’s directive to pay half of the P92 million arrears to the IOC for the coverage of the Olympic Games in Athens by NBN-TV4
