HP ties up with Millinux Networks to make servers affordable to SMEs

TWO information technology (IT) companies have collaborated to give small and medium enterprises (SMEs) the opportunity to migrate into the electronic age.

According to Veronica Escalante, HP Philippines industry standard servers product specialist, HP has tied up with Millinux Networks Co. Inc. to make its line of HP ProLiant servers affordable to the SMEs.

Millinux is a company based in Malaysia that specializes in the research and development of comprehensive solutions using embedded Linux technology and Intel applied computing platform.

HP, on the other hand, delivers vital technology for business and life. Its solutions span from IT infrastructure, personal computing and access devices, to global services and imaging and printing for consumers, enterprises and small and medium businesses.

Escalante said HP’s ProLiant servers come with Millinux’s x-server software, a Linux solution that offers “unparalleled functionality by integrating all of the tools and services necessary for a network at a fraction of the cost of a general server.”

“This multi-function server is designed to meet the rapid growing demand of small and medium sized businesses to large enterprise space,” she told a press conference at the Cebu City Marriott Hotel last Tuesday.

The server can handle over 250 users and facilitates the day-to-day management of key applications like filing, printing, network back-up, Web access, email, FTP and firewall.

“With this, users can launch a website, share an Internet connection with the company, manage their own email system, and even print documents across the server network,” said Millinux managing director Danny Tan.

He said the Millinux server was designed to easily fit within any network environment and reduce the workloads of a dedicated network administrator.

“Even if it is using Linux, it can co-exist with desktops running on Microsoft. Once it is up and running, the X-console will allow IT managers to add new users and groups, activate new services and set security features in a few simple steps,” Tan said.

Among the features included in the HP Millinux X-server solution are file or storage and print server, email and Web services server, dedicated Intranet or Internet web server, dedicated gateway proxy server for superior resource management and unlimited client access licensee. (JBN)
