29ers win in double OT

Game today

(CP Tinga Memorial Hall, Taguig M.M.)
6 p.m. – Batangas vs. Taguig

THE Batangas 29ers huffed and puffed their way to taking a piece of the leadership up North with a hard-earned 125-118 double overtime win over the Ozamis Cotta in the NBC National Championships at the Lipa Cultural and Convention Center in Batangas City.

The 29ers bounced back from a monumental breakdown in the second half with former NU Bulldog slotman Ariel de Castro scoring 15 of his 27 points in the two overtime periods to lead Batangas to its second straight home win.

The victory tied the 29ers with Laguna at 4-3 to share the top spot in the North division.

Boyet Guerrero sank two free throws at the end of regulation to send the game into overtime at 98-all for the unyielding Ozamis, which came off a 19-point deficit.

Egay Echavez opened the extension with a triple to put Ozamis ahead, 101-98, but the 29ers dropped a 6-0 run to take the lead, 104-101, with 2:39 left before the Cotta closed in at 108-107, nine seconds left.

Echavez had a chance to win it for Ozamis but missed one of his two free throws off John Dale Valeña’s foul in the last 4.4 seconds sending the game into its second overtime, a first in the league.

Ozamis’ last threat was at 118-116 in the last 1:37 before the 29ers made a 7-2 blast to give the Cotta its second loss in their north swing.
