Thursday, August 19, 2004 Chiongbian: Youngest CCC team By Edgar R. Chiongbian Tee time
THE 12th Luzvimin Interclub golf tournament of WGAP is on its second day of the scheduled three-day competition. Twenty-two teams, the same number last year, are here to battle it out in three divisions – Diamond, Ruby and Pearl – for the bragging rights as the best golf club in women’s golf.
Although the main thrust of the tournament is the team competition, the fight for individual honors is also quite significant, as the players’ personal performance counts toward their WGAP amateur rankings. There will also be individual awards to the top two players in each of the three handicap categories.
The team is made up of six players with the best four scores to count. Like last year, Canlubang again fielded only four players to demonstrate super confidence in their players, leaving no margin for error. Hopefully the results won’t be the same as last year when Canlubang, as defending champions lost their top rank crown in the Diamond division when one of their players had a bad round.
The Canlubang team is lead by national star amateur player Carmelette Villaroman, who will be challenged by other top amateur players Lina de Guzman, Stephanie Yu, Lora Roberto, Carina Ricamonte, Vinice Godio, Therese Dabao and Liza Lopez.
The three Cebu teams are bracketed in each of the three divisions. Cebu Country Club in the premier Diamond division has fielded their youngest team ever. Two jungolfers, 14-year-old Kathleen Uy and 15-year-old Jyra Wong will supplement the firepower of Maite Unchuan, Eva Hino, Mariko Ikihata and Mercy Bejar.
The Alta Vista team is in the Ruby division with Joan Castillo, Joy Siguan, Gina Yap, Divina Ricardo, Sandra Smits and Gloria Canizares. Club Filipino is in the Pearl division with Gloria Alazas, Jeanette Chiu, Rosita Uy, Flor Streegan, Remy Perez and Maita Florendo. Good luck ladies!
Don’t forget to sign up for the Matias H. Aznar Cup golf tournament scheduled next weekend, Aug. 28-29. This tournament is exclusive to members of Alta Vista and sponsors only. Bombi Aznar informed me that you won’t regret ever joining this event because the Aznar Cup has in store loads of prizes for the winners and lucky people whose names will be drawn in the raffles.
The inauguration of Steel+Stone, the most expensive hardware store you can find was held last Friday at their showroom in the new USP building in Salinas drive. The store is owned by the family of Bonifacio Sia, whose son Bernard Von Sia is the GM and the brains behind this totally revolutionary concept of expensive hardware stuff.
Mostly focused on bathroom accessories, they have a toilet that is fully automatic. You press a button that opens the lid so you can sit and when you’re done, press another button and it goes through the sequence of washing your behind with a stream of water and blowing warm air to dry you; making the toilet paper obsolete.
When you get up, it flushes and closes the lid after you, and ready for the next customer. But you know with all that sophistication I was somewhat disappointed because it doesn’t comb your hair.
GOLF TIP: Proper weight transfer is very important to the swing. The legs and body are the main reason you are getting clubhead speed by allowing your arm to swing as freely and quickly as possible in the correct arc.
During the backswing, allow the momentum of the swinging arms to shift your weight from the left foot to the inside of your right foot and onto the right heel at the top of the swing. On the downswing, plant your left heel (lifted during the backswing) firmly to the ground and move the left knee laterally to allow the arms to drop inward and downward.
The momentum will move your weight towards your left foot at the point of impact. At the finish, allow your leg and body to shift to your left foot while facing the target.
