Micame: Nautical highway
By Rel P. Micame

TERMINAL. President Gloria Arroyo congratulated Monday the Cordova Municipal Government for its initiative in establishing a roll-on-roll-off (roro) terminal in the town. The Cordovo roro terminal project is labeled by the President as a segment of the Nautical Highway throughout the country.

Cordova Mayor Arleigh Sitoy said the terminal will link the town to Getafe and Ubay in Bohol, Maasin City in Southern Leyte and Jasaan, Misamis Oriental. With these routes to the Visayas and Mindanao, Cordova will be as good as linked with the rest of the country.

EARLIER TERMINALS. Cebu has long been linked with some areas in the Visayas through roro terminals established by enterprising Cebuanos. These terminals enable motorists from Cebu to travel to Luzon and Mindanao.

MANDAUE-HINDANG, LEYTE. Cebu is now linked with Hindang in south-western Leyte through the roro vessels of the Lua family which make three trips daily to the southwestern Leyte port and vice versa.

A regular Danao-Isabel, Leyte Roro route and vice versa daily has long been established by the Aznar family. Likewise, a Roro route daily has been established by businessman Errnie Rizarri from Carmen, Cebu to Albuera, Leyte and vice versa.

All of the three roro routes enable Cebu motorists to travel to Luzon and Mindanao.

OTHER VISAYAN PORTS. Cebuano motorists can go to Negros and back through a roro vessel from Oslob, Cebu to San Jose, Negros Oriental, and from Toledo City to San Carlos, Negros Occidental.

Likewise, motorists from Cebu can go to Bohol and back through a regular Argao, Cebu-Loon, Bohol roro trip.

OVER EXTRACTION. According to a Worldwatch Institute publication released in 2002, Metro Cebu Water District (MCWD) has over extracted water from its underground sources. The water district produces 94 percent of its water yield from underground. And there is the danger of totally depleting the aquifer.

With scarce water sources, MCWD should help fast track the development of the water supply from Carmen in northern Cebu. The water district should follow up with the National Economic and Development Authority (Neda) the issuance of endorsement from the Investment Coordinating Council. The consortium of Ayala Corp. and Central Equity Ventures Inc. has been waiting for that endorsement so they can finalize their negotiation with the Municipality of Carmen.

KAWASAN FALLS. When the Carmen water supply project is already operational, MCWD should conduct a feasibility study of developing the Kawasan falls in southern Cebu as a water source
The water district should also consider underwater cable to get supply from Inabanga river in Bohol.

APPRAISAL SEMINAR A real estate appraisal seminar is scheduled at the Sacred Heart Center on D. Jakosalem St., Cebu City on Oct. 1 to 3.
