Cebu’s Calinawan wins 4th leg in CDO

CEBU City’s fastest-rising triathlon star Gerrie Calinawan made waves in the fourth leg of the 2004 National Age-Group Triathlon (NAGT) series in Cagayan de Oro City yesterday as he topped the Male 19-Under championship in a time that bested the rest of the Men’s division.

Calinawan’s hard work and renewed confidence paid off as he zoomed past his rivals in the 750-meter swim, 20-kilometer bike, five-kilometer run event with a time of one hour, two minutes and 23 seconds.

Rally

Calinawan’s feat earned him 100 points in the race backed by Speedo, Nestlé PowerBar, Viajero, Reliv Philippines, PSC, POC Sports For All Commission, Clark Hatch Gym, Asian Centre for Insulation Philippines, Sundowners, Amstar, San Miguel Beer, Neri Swimming School, Facil Financing Corp, CDO TRI Board Members, Utility Assurance, Candy’s Corner & Restaurant, and the City Government of Cagayan de Oro.

Calinawan bounced back from a distant No. 4 finish in the swim leg and rallied to grab the lead for good in the bike. He is now second overall in the series with a total of 210 points total.

Hard training

“I knew I was going to win because I trained so hard for this race,” said the 19-year-old Calinawan.

Just last Aug. 14, he won the Male Juniors title in the Danao City Aquathlon Open after defeating Talisay City’s teenage sensation Dec Rowan Fernandez, who similarly trailed him in the Male 19-Under category yesterday.

Talisay City’s Israel Nual completed the Cebuano’s 1-2 finish in the overall race as he landed second behind Calinawan with his clocking of 1:03:41, which also earned him the championship diadem in the Male 20-24 division.

Cagayan de Oro’s bet Roger Atis finished third overall and second in the Male 20-24 division after he inked a time of 1:09:00. (JSV)
