People By Nelia G. Neri Eve
Nestor Ortiz Sulpico, Filipino cab driver in New York, did his countrymen proud when he returned a bagful of black pearls that was left in his taxicab one balmy evening last July by a passenger who had one drink too many.
Over dinner at the City Sports Club two weeks ago, Nestor told his story to the members of the Philippines Foundation, Inc. led by president, Fr. Ernesto Javier S.J. It was an inspiring and heartwarming tale of a hardworking Ilonggo who from a life of anonymity, has been thrown into the limelight. Not that he is complaining because it has opened a lot of doors for him, one of them being a scholarship at the Nursing School of Cedars Sinai Hospital in New York.
Nestor is definitely a Valuable Filipino and as such, was given a citation by the Philippines Foundation, Inc. during that simple dinner gathering.

When San Francisco-based Johnny Gonzales came to town, his high school buddies from the USC-Boys High arranged an overnight outing at the Jesever Farm in Barili with former Mayor Alvin Garcia playing host. It was a riot with “the boys” eating, drinking, singing and reminiscing till the wee, wee, hours. Camaraderie and bonding at its best!

California balikbayans William and Lagring Gonzales, Boy and Cynthia Abapo, Pablito and Agnes Kintanar and Ticboy Reyes were honorees at a dinner party organized by dear friends at a lovely home in Maria Luisa Park (sorry, the homeowner prefers to be anonymous). Food and fun galore and hospitality at its finest!
On the day of Lagring’s departure (she stayed in town the longest), Loloy and Angie Unchuan rolled out the red carpet for her at their seaside home in Mactan. It was the idyllic setting for Lagring who won’t be seeing our shores for sometime.

A gathering of grandmas could well describe the ladies’ lunch at Lai Garden in Crossroads. There was Agie Escario talking about how doting a grandpa Greg is to their one and only apo; grandmother of twins Linda Almendras gushing about Pia and Manuel’s boy and girl; Zeny Larrazabal showing around a photo of her youngest apo from Yong and Donna; Ester Fajardo who has a pre-teen grandson; grandma of two Norma Borromeo; glamorous grandma Lorna Quisumbing; and Nita Chiongbian, the hippest of all grandmas.
