CH can make 60 ‘brand new’ guns out of 100 old ones: mayor

THE Cebu City Police Office (CCPO) will have 60 “brand new” M16 rifles if the City Council approves the repair and refurbishment of 100 firearms at P50,000 each.

By “brand new,” Osmeña meant that the 60 M16s will be made out of assembled parts of the unserviceable firearms, whose defects may only be in the main spring or barrels.

The City will have to spend P3 million if it gets the nod of the Council to let Mayor Tomas Osmeña sign a memorandum of agreement with the Police Regional Office (PRO) 7.

Deliberation

The council has yet to deliberate on the proposed resolution since the matter was still referred to the committee on police to make sure that the repair cost is reasonable.

Osmeña said in a news conference last Thursday that only 60 “brand new” rifles can be made out of the 100 unserviceable M16 rifles that the PRO 7 plans to donate to the city police.

Osmeña said CCPO badly needs the rifles because “we are up against criminal elements who are armed.”

Technical aspects

The mayor believes that the policemen’s capability will greatly improve once the rifles are repaired and turned over to CCPO.

Councilor Edgardo Labella earlier asked the committee on police to look into the technical aspects of the agreement, such as the model, efficiency, usefulness and safety of the firearms. (LCR)
