Walk hopes to generate P900T

ALAY Lakad organizers hope to gather a crowd of 150,000 in tomorrow’s annual walk and generate P900,000 for the education and skills training of out-of-school youth in Cebu City.

Before, the funds generated from the walk were spent only on scholarship grants. This year, the Alay Lakad will also start to spend for the skills training and capability building of children who are not in school.

Recipients

“Aside from the scholarship, this time we will also provide community-based livelihood projects and skills training so that the out-of-school youth can also be productive,” City Councilor Gerardo Carillo said.

Joey Francis Umerez, Alay Lakad 2004 overall chairman, said they expect to have at least a 10-percent increase in the crowd turnout compared with last year, when 136,000 participants joined the event.

For every participant, the Cebu City Government will give a counterpart fund of P6 for the scholarship.

The Cebu City Police Office Traffic Group also announced that streets affected by the parade route will be closed to traffic starting noon of Sunday.

Participants will assemble at the Plaza Independencia and the Cebu Provincial Capitol and will start walking towards the Cebu City Sports Center at 1 p.m.

Raffles, sponsors

Aside from the funds from the City Government, scholarship funds will also be generated from raffle tickets and corporate sponsors.

Raffle tickets will be sold at 99 centavos each to the participants, who will get a chance to win cash prizes ranging from P500 to P5,000.

The participants will also be treated to entertainment and drum and bugle performances at the sports center where the raffle draw will be held.

Steve Tan, member of the organizing committee, urged private school students and their parents to attend the walk “so we can generate more funds for our out-of-school youth.” (LCR)
