Cañete Cebu City’s lone contender in Southeast Asian U-14 tennis tilt

TEAM Cebu City’s James Karl Cañete will be the sole representative from Cebu in the Southeast Asian 14-Under Junior Tennis Tournament on Sept. 21-25 at the Rizal Sports Club in Pasig City.

Cañete, who handily defeated Niklas Barwitz of Germany in the first round of the recently concluded International Children’s Games (ICG) in Cleveland, will face top contenders from Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand in the five-day competition sponsored by the Asian Tennis Federation.

Cañete was supposed to be joined by fellow TCC netter Juluis Lagman, but school commitments prevented Lagman from joining the tournament.

“I have a good chance because I learned a lot from the ICG,” said the 14 year old Cañete.

Tought opponents

Cañete said he expects tough fights from Thailand and Chinese-Taipie.

Cañete, a second-year student at the University of the Visayas, recently ruled the Gullas Tennis Cup and the Osaka Junior Tennis Circuit.

TCC tennis head coach Fritz Tabura, who will accompany Cañete in the tournament, said his player is geared up for the coming from a good rest.

Cebu City Sports Commission Chairman Jonathan Guardo, for his part, said he encouraged TCC members to join in various tournaments to prepare for next year’s ICG.

“This Southeast tennis tournament will just be ‘chickenfeed’ to Cañete after competing with players from Germany, England and Switzerland. I have witnessed how this young athlete has evolved into a smart player,” said Guardo.

Cañete and Tabura will depart for Manila on Monday. (ML)
