Club Monday makes finals

WITH its back against the wall, Club Monday-Insuladd made a last-minute defensive change to cart away with the last finals seat of the Castrol 2004 Executive’s Cup basketball tournament.

After playing catch-up ball for three quarters, Club Monday-Insuladd junked its customary zone defense, switched to man-to-man, and unleashed a debilitating fourth-quarter siege to register a dramatic 88-80 victory over the San Carlos Boys High Alumni Basketball Association-Vic Enterprises at the City Sports Club-Cebu Gym Wednesday night.

Stephen Reyes topscored with 20 points on an 8-of-15 shooting clip, while John Seno posted a forceful 19-point, 16-rebound outing for Club Monday, which also drew 16 points each from Boy Alfeche and Jun Macasero, and 11 from Ricky Sarasaba.

The stellar individual performances notwithstanding, Club Monday’s finals-clinching win was largely a product of its adaptive defensive philosophy.

Next on Club Monday’s hit list is top-ranked Lilo-anon Sports Organization in a best-of-three showdown for the maiden Executive’s Cup crown at 4:30 p.m. tomorrow, right after the Cebu Eastern College Alumni Basketball Association (Cecaba) All-Stars tackle SCBHABA in a winner-take-all match for the third place plum at 3 pm.
