Tribu loses anew
By Rommel c. Manlosa
Sun.Star Staff Reporter

BATANGAS escaped landing at the cellar of the Northern division, but the dramatic 86-84 victory Thursday night was more meaningful as they avenged their 71-82 defeat at the hands of the league’s overall leader, Tribu Sugbu, in the NBC National Championship at the Lipa aCultural and Convention Center.

The game was Tribu Sugbu’s final game of the elimination round. The defeat did not affect the Tribesmen as they are already assured of an automatic slot into the Division finals.

However, it was a frustrating loss for Tribu Sugbu, who enjoyed a 76-69 lead midway in the final period before succumbing to the full-court pressure of the 29ers, giving up 17 unanswered baskets.

The run allowed Batangas to go up, 84-76, with 2:36 remaining before Tribu erupted with a 8-2 run that put the team just two points behind, 84-86, with 38.6 seconds left to play.

Tribu had two chances to tie the game, but the attempts of Ronaldo Bucao and Dennis Concha failed to find the bottom of the net as time expired, allowing Batangas to snap a three-game losing skid.

Batangas (86) – Saygo 20, Neo 15, Manucat 14, Rodriguez 9, Sta. Cruz 8, Agleron 7, De Castro 6, Finuliar 2, Valena 1, Mallari 0, Jun Cuevas 0. Tribu Sugbu (84) – Dela Rosa 17, Concha 16, Elim 14, Lanete 7, Sanders 7, Mercado 5, lmacin 4, Bucao 3, Licanda 3, Grijaldo 2, Piodo 2. Quarterscores: 21-22; 45-49; 58-63; 86-84.
