P2 million lost in downtown fire

AN ESTIMATED P2 million worth of properties went up in smoke in a fire that hit a commercial building in downtown Cebu City last Friday night.

A fireman, SFO3 Paquito Carillo, was injured in the hands while putting out the blaze.

Witnesses told investigators they saw thick smoke coming from the La Fortuna Bakery along Magallanes St.

Since the contents of the stockroom were mostly combustible materials, the fire immediately spread and affected neighboring establishments.

The fire also destroyed LBL Enterprises, D’ Best Kitchenette, Visayan Educational Supply, Worldwide Pharmacy, CST School and Office Supply, and Magallanes Bazaar.

General alarm

The Bureau of Fire Protection learned of the fire at 10:25 p.m. and declared a general alarm. It took them close to two hours to put the blaze under control.

The Filipino-Chinese Fire Brigade, Emergency Rescue Unit Foundation and other fire stations in Metro Cebu assisted in putting off the fire.

Initial investigation by SFO1 Jolito Manding showed that the fire started at the stockroom of the La Fortuna Bakery at the second floor of the building.

Witnesses Veronica Calo of D’ Best Kitchenette and security guard Bernie Asidiente related the incident to Manding.

Landmark

The La Fortuna bakery, owned by the Sy family, has been selling tikoy, red ampao, masi and other Chinese delicacies since the 1950s.

The bakery has several branches in Cebu City. The one along Magallanes St. was considered a landmark in Cebu. La Fortuna manager Mary Sy said no one was left at the store when they closed at 8 p.m. last Friday.

BFP Cebu City Fire Marshal Ismael Codilla said it took them more than an hour to control the fire. But firefighters stayed at the scene the entire evening and visited it again yesterday afternoon to prevent embers from rekindling.

Codilla said the BFP investigation section is still investigating the fire. (JST/With JFT of Superbalita)
