Gerry back in the ring tonight

GERRY Peñalosa’s quest to become a world champion once again will start tonight as he faces tough Thai opponent Samingkao Chutipol in a 10-round, non-title duel at the Mandaue City Sports and Cultural Complex.

Meantime, fighting underneath is another former world champion, Malcolm Tuñacao, who is coming off a 16-month hiatus when he takes on Bernard Oclos of Davao City, also for 10 rounds.

It would be a crucial battle for the 32-year-old Peñalosa, who is looking to get a crack at the International Boxing Federation title, currently held by Luis Alberto Perez of Nicaragua.

Peñalosa stays fit despite announcing his retirement in June 2003 after losing his bid to reclaim the WBC 115-pound title twice to the former champion Masamori Tokuyama. (RCM)
