Business group: Amnesty condones tax evaders
MANILA--The tax amnesty proposal of the Arroyo government forgives tax evaders while penalizing dutiful taxpayers.
This was the position taken by the Federation of Philippine Industries (FPI) to one of the proposals sent by the embattled palace to Congress as one of the core measures to avert a looming fiscal crisis.
In an official position paper signed by its chairman Meneleo Carlos and president Jesus Arranza, FPI said the amnesty will only condition the public to cheat “since there will be future amnesties anyway.”
The proposed tax amnesty was approved in principle by the House ways and means committee chaired by Tarlac lawmaker Jesli Lapus last Tuesday.
The FPI officials asserted that “the grant of one amnesty after another over the past 30 years has indubitably done damage...to the moral fiber of our nation.”
FPI questioned the ability to make the tax amnesty a tool in coaxing the underground economy to surface, and its effectiveness in raising more taxes and sustaining it over the years. The duo, however, said if government had to give the amnesty, this one must be the last. (Phil-export News)
