Fairchild in Cebu for 25 years now
MULTINATIONAL company Fairchild Semiconductor International has reaffirmed its commitment to stay in the Philippines as it celebrates its 25th year of operations in the country, specifically in Cebu, today.
“Fairchild is here to stay. Our mother company has been constantly investing in its Cebu plant,” Fairchild Semiconductor Cebu (FSC) managing director Rodulfo Bollozos said.
FSC, one of Fairchild’s assembly and test plants, is located in the Mactan Economic Zone 1.
Bollozos said the relatively high cost of business operations in the Philippines with the high cost of utilities, especially power and water, have not hampered the competitiveness of FSC. The key is efficient use of these resources and productivity.
Fairchild has assembly and test plants in Malaysia and China. Its headquarters is located in South Portland, Maine, USA.
Bollozos said FSC offset the high cost of power, water and labor by looking at other areas where it can save, such as the continuous implementation of its environmental program.
“The company’s policy to save the environment is a two-edged sword. It is a way for the company to fulfill our social obligation as well as help the company cut on cost,” he said.
Giving importance to its labor force by looking at their needs such as medical and financial needs also makes production at FSC efficient.
“(No matter) how computerized or mechanized your company is, at the end of the day, it is still people who are behind these machines,” Bollozos said.
Fairchild Semiconductor International is the leading global supplier of high-performance semiconductor products in the power, interface, analog, mixed signal, logic, optoelectronic, and configurable products markets.
Fairchild Semiconductor also continues to expand in the China market, by adding global power resource centers in Shanghai and Shenzhen and increasing head count and capacity at its Suzhou facility.
This will not pose a threat to the Cebu facility.
“We need the China facilities to in-source assembly and test manufacturing, thus reducing our overall cost. We expect to continue to run our existing manufacturing sites throughout the world, including Cebu,” Bollozos said.
Examples of achievements by Fairchild’s global power resource centers include reduction in part count in a color TV power supply from 200 to 60 devices, a 60 percent reduction in board space for automotive ignition control systems, and the implementation of an ultra-slim power supply design for an LCD TV.
Fairchild has six global power resource centers worldwide, four of which are in Asia: Shanghai and Shenzhen, China; Bucheon, Korea; and Taipei, Taiwan. JBN
