Media party, photo exhibit in Cebu Press Freedom Week

The concept of democracy is characterized by—among other things—free expression.

Indeed, one can say that one of the more palpable signs of a working democracy is a dynamic, active media. And along the way, the people who make up this particular group in society must overcome obstacles, internal and external threats. But that which cannot destroy them, can only make them stronger. And they keep on going, adamantly defending the right to expression, still surviving.

In the case of the Cebu media, this is exactly what they’re doing ever since.

That is why this year, they will once again hold the annual Cebu Press Freedom Week—to celebrate and uphold the freedom of the press. The weeklong celebration kicked off yesterday. It will run until Sept. 25.

This year, the celebration gives importance to the media men and women who have made significant contributions to the Cebu press. A special photo exhibit will be unveiled today, Sept. 20, at 5:30 p.m. at the Activity Center of the Ayala Center Cebu.

Using photo images, the exhibit will feature unforgettable highlights in the illustrious history of the Cebu press. This exhibit will also give the public a rare glimpse of the legendary media personalities who have unsteadily defended the concept of press freedom in Cebu.

At 7 tonight, there will also be a media party at the Activity Center of the Ayala Center Cebu. In this occasion, members of the local media will show their exemplary solidarity and camaraderie as they gather together for one night of frolicking celebration. Key editors of local newspapers and media personalities from local broadcast stations converge to share their experiences.

Seasoned reporters rub shoulders with neophyte scribes, endowing their less experienced colleagues with anecdotes, advice and the latest political joke.

The party will also feature fun-filled cocktails and exciting raffle prizes for the participating media. To add more brio to the already exuberant atmosphere, live music will be provided by two of Cebu’s most in-demand bands—Intensity 8 and Acoustic Hive.

The media party is sponsored by Asia Brewery, Ayala Business Club, Ayala Center Cebu, Caltex Philippines Inc., Commonwealth Estate Inc., Epson Philippines Inc., Globe Telecom, Globelines and GlobeQUEST. This event is organized by JYGonzales & Partners.
