College scholarships ready for children, siblings of OFWs

Children and siblings of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) may now start applying for college scholarships for the next school year with the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) 7 office.

Under OWWA’s Education for Development Scholarship Program (EDSP), qualified dependents of OFWs could enroll in any four-year college degree courses at any college or university with Commission on Higher Education accreditation.

OWWA 7 officer-in-charge Mae Codilla said each dependent will be entitled to a P30,000 financial assistance per semester.

Any balance of the amount will be given as allowance at the end of the semester.

Qualified

All graduating high school students with parents working as OFWs or with unmarried brothers or sisters presently employed abroad are qualified to take the National Qualifying Exams this December.

Deadline for submission of applications with Owwa 7 office will be on Nov. 3, 2004.

Under OWWA’s mandate, it will annually allocate P3 million of its annual budget for the program, which will benefit 100 qualified students nationwide.

Benefit

Under OWWA’s mandate, it will annually allocate P3 million of its annual budget for the program, which will benefit 100 qualified students nationwide.

Aside from EDSP, the government, through the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office, granted benefits to children of OFWs through the Congressional Migrant Workers Scholarship Program (CMWSP).

However, Codilla said there are no beneficiaries under the program for next school year due to the lack of budget.

Under the program, scholars were supposed to receive P10,000 assistance for tuition, a P3,500 monthly stipend as well as a P1,000 book allowance and P500 clothing allowance per semester.

For this school year, there are eight students under the EDSP and eight others in the CMWSP. CYR
