M. LHUILLIER Kwarta Padala-Cebu City showed it is serious in putting up a championship-caliber team United Regional Basketball League (URBL) after recently beefing up its line-up.

The Jewelers added veteran guard Jomer Rubi, who played for Tanduay Rhum in the Philippine Basketball Association, to provide experience at the backcourt.

In place of center Franklyn Nailon, who opted to join his collegiate coach Roehl Gomez and Jake Rojas in Lactovitale-Cebu Province, coach Raul “Yayoy” Alcoseba tapped the services of prolific center Nyoks de Guzman.

Rubi, who played college ball at the University of Perpetual Help and was an RP Team member from 1997-’99, replaced Jun Gabica, while Ronnie Padilla, another veteran banger, was placed on the reserve list.

Rey Cantona has been dropped out of the team.

“I believe the acquisition of Rubi and de Guzman is not going to fortify our bid for the title. However, this move is only a preparation for the tough battle ahead, because competition is going to be a tough,” said Alcoseba.

The Jewelers will have their final tune-up game against the Pardo Selection at 8:30 p.m. today at the Pardo Sports Complex, part of Pardo’s annual fiesta celebration in honor of its patron St. Tomas of Villanueva.

M. Lhuillier-Cebu City will face a powerhouse team from the north, the Ilocus Sur Snipers, when the league opens on Sept. 25 at the Cebu Coliseum.

Ilocus Sur has enlisted the services of Jerome Barbosa, Ryan Bernardo, Philip Butel, Ramsy Cabradilla, Johnedel Cardel, Richard Hardin and former Cebu Gems player Michael Mañigo.

Completing the liune-up are Donamar Mendoza, Richard Michael, Mark Mico Quitoriano, Francis Rauschmayer, Orly Torrente, Allan Yu, and Ben Ryan Yulo.
