USP surprises champion in Cesafi football

THE University of Southern Philippines stunned three-time defending champion University of San Jose-Recoletos with an equalizer early in the second half to force a tricky 1-1 draw yesterday.

The opening game of the 2004 Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) collegiate football at the University of San Carlos-Technological Center saw the Jaguars, who were anticipated to get their four-peat campaign rolling with an emphatic win, step on the gas early with a goal in the second minute.

USJ-R striker Mark Buglosa caught the USP defense napping as he blasted in a quick goal to give the Jaguars a confident start.

But just as USJ-R thought they were on easy street, USP’s defense picked up, denying the champion a goal for the rest of the first half while making its offensive presence felt.

The Panthers of coach Eleazar Toledo finally got its offense in full gear at the start of the second half and an opening in the 59th allowed midfielder Joey Iway to take a long-range bullet for the tie.

The Joselito Bono-coached USJ-R still had some gas left as it made a few attempts in the remaining minutes but the re-energized USP defense was just too sticky. PCC
