Cañete enters Q-finals

JAMES Carl Cañete advanced to the quarterfinal round after defeating Myanmar’s Kyaw Naing Aung, 6-3, 6-1, yesterday in the Futures Foundation-Asian Tennis Federation 14-Under Series at the Yñares Socio-Cultural Sports Center in Pasig City.

Cañete, who also had an easy win over Malaysian Edric Lo in the first round, will meet his toughest test in the quarterfinals when he faces second-seed El Santo Santos.

Santo Santos outclassed Malaysian Han Zhou Tan, 6-1, 6-1, while top-seed Pabloe Olivarez downed another Malaysian, Mark Pee Kwang Xin, 6-4, 6-0, to arrange a quarterfinal meeting against Jose Emmanuel Narvaez, a 7-5, 6-1 winner over Akio Hari Ong Sy.

In other matches, John Franc Gil Largo reined in Joshua Tan Ho, 6-4, 6-1, while Tomas Apacible prevailed over wild card Roman Floreza, 6-3, 6-3.

In the Girls singles division, top-ranked Malaysian Jawariah Nordin demolished Martina Rivero, 6-0, 6-0, to advance to the quarterfinals against local bet Zhane Quitara, a 6-0, 6-1 winner over Myanmar’s Khaine Nyee.

Also advancing was third seed local Jessica Agra, who clobbered compatriot Julie Em Botor, 6-0, 6-2. Agra will meet the winner between fifth-seed Malaysian Vythinatha Chellpriya and local Anne Christine Patrimonio.

Other locals seeing action in this weeklong event sponsored by the Australian Open are second-seed Trudy Gine Amoranto, Ma. Regina Santiago, Sarah Jane Lim, Victoria Magaway and Noelle Nikki Zoleta. (ML)
