Paragua RP No.1; Cebu’s Sanchez seventh
INTERNATIONAL Master Mark Paragua retained his top post in the country after the World Chess Federation (Fide) released its ratings for the months covering July to September.
On the other hand, the National Chess Federation of the Philippines was also reinstated in the list after paying its dues of P120,000 to the governing body.
Paragua, who bagged his final grandmaster norm last week, is now rated 2530 to take the top spot, while GMs Joey Antonio and Eugene Torre are still at second and third with 2524 and 2518.
More to come
Paragua’s rating is still expected to shoot up in the next release in October as the listing did not include his first-place finish in the 1st Alushta GM Tournament and a second-place standing in the 2nd Alushta GM Tournament.
US-based IM Rogelio Barcenilla is fourth at 2507, while GM Nelson Mariano II is fifth with 2464, just one ahead of inactive GM Bong Villamayor.
Cebu’s Europe-based IM Joseph Sanchez is seventh in the list with 2460 with IMs Ildefonso Datu (2457), Enrique Pacienca (2449) and Ronald Dableo (2439) completing the top 10.
Cebuano IMs Richard Bitoon (2430) and Barlo Nadera (2424) are ranked 12th and 13th, behind 12th-ranked NM Emmanuel Senador 2432).
In the Women’s side, untitled Christine Castellano tops the list at 2139 ahead of WIM Beverly Mendoza (2131), while WIM Cristine Rose Mariano and WFM Sheerie Joy Lomibao occupy the next two sots at 2096 and 2089.
Former No.1 WIM Arianne Bo Caoili is now rated under Australia. The Brisbane-based Caoili now has an Elo rating of 2250, good for No.37 in Australia. (ML)
