Rain cuts short Milo opening By Jade S. Violeta Sun.Star Staff Reporter
A SUDDEN heavy downpour may have marred the opening day of the 8th Milo Little Olympics-Visayas competition, but it didn’t dampen the spirits of the thousands of athletes, students, coaches and spectators who filled the Cebu City Sports Center grandstand to the rafters to witness the colorful ceremony.
Due to the rain, only the selection of the best muse in the elementary and secondary divisions pushed through, while the anticipated cheer-dance competition was postponed to a still to be determined date.
The University of San Jose-Recoletos and the City Central School delegations cornered the opening-day honors as their muses glittered brightest. Roxanne Rodil bested 30 other rivals to be adjudged Best Muse in the secondary division, while CCS’s Joy Vanessa Uy wowed the four judges to emerge atop 18 other contestants in the elementary division.
City Central School bagged a second trophy when it snared the Biggest Delegation award in the elementary division, while Abellana National School sent the biggest number delegates among secondary-division participants.
The more than 30 high-school teams and 19 elementary squads come from Bohol, Siquijor, Negros Oriental, Negros Occidental, Leyte, Samar and Cebu.
Official hostilities start today with eight disciplines taking center stage in different venues.
The powerhouse University of Cebu Webmasters, aiming for an unprecedented eighth straight overall title in the high-school division, are again the team to beat in the multi-event competition.
The Webmasters are expected to pull away early today in the rankings as medal-rich athletics kicks off at the CCSC.
The Webmasters’ vast gold medal harvest last year came from athletics, Boys badminton, chess and table tennis.
University of the Visayas, on the other hand, will try to extend its dominance in the elementary division as it starts its bid for a second championship title after unseating Mabolo District by one gold medal last year.
UV’s gymnasts are again expected to shine like they did last year when they carted away almost all the gold medals in gymnastics. Competitions in gymnastics start on Oct. 8 at the Guadalupe Gym.
Other events kicking off today at the CCSC are badminton, chess, football, swimming, table tennis and volleyball. Lawn tennis will open today at the Cebu Country Club, while sipa and sepak takraw get underway at the Cebu City National Science High School.
