Luab: ‘Brigadoon’ By Evelyn R. Luab Light sunday
Browsing through the DVDs and VCDs at Video City, I came across the tape Brigadoon, starring Gene Kelly, Van Johnson and Cyd Cherisse. I immediately borrowed it and spent a very relaxing time enjoying a fantasy, woven intricately by the producer and director of the movie.
The story revolves around a pastor, John Forsyte, who wanted to preserve the beauty of life, and the simplicity of the people by asking God to preserve their town from the outside world of so much noise and sin.
John Forsyte’s prayer was granted and the little town of Brigadoon was allowed to sleep in the mist for a hundred years then come to life for a day, then to sleep again for the next hundred years and the cycle would go on.
But to the people of Brigadoon it was just a matter of sleeping at night and waking up the next day. Brigadoon supposedly was a place in Scotland but it was not on the map. Gene Kelly and Van Johnson stumbled upon this town when they went hunting in its forest.
To make a long story short, Gene Kelly met Cyd Cherisse and fell in love with her. However, when he finally had to make a choice whether to stay with her in Brigadoon or go home, his practical nature could not leave reality behind and he opted to go home because he didn’t believe in miracles.
Once home, he could not forget Cyd Cherisse and Brigadoon. He also could not marry his fiancée of long standing and so he went back to Scotland and waited in the mists of Brigadoon willing the miracle to occur.
Out of the mists the voice of the village schoolmaster reached him saying, “You woke me up, laddie. I told you before ‘if you only have faith, then the miracle will come.’ Go to her!” As all movies of the oldies end, the hero and heroin, met again and lived happily ever after in Brigadoon.
For many of us, our miracles come in many ways. So much is brought about by faith, by eyes and heart that trust in a loving God who makes all things possible.
Rico Diaz Cojuangco has so much faith and leaves her life in His loving hands.
Today we have so many graduates and so few job openings. However, how come some are able to land juicy jobs?
In our present climate of financial difficulties, we still find enterprising, hopeful young men and women who open restaurants, coffee shops, boutiques, furniture shops, etc. because not only are they willing to work so hard but they also believe in the miracle that the Philippines will get out of the financial mess we are in now.
Actually it is the cynical who pass themselves off as being pragmatic and realistic who destroy our hopes, and our dreams.
When estranged couples speak to the young they usually say, “Marriage? What a lousy institution! Why don’t you people just ‘live in’ after all love does not last!”
While this is true for a good number of couples, we still would like to say to the young, “Wait for the right one to come along. Pray to God for the right mate and believe that marriage is a lasting commitment. Good lasting marriages do exist.” Why? Because people with faith in their hearts make the miracle of love occur.
What about those whose marriages fail in spite of everything? Have faith! Believe that life can still go on. Believe that there is an omnipotent loving God who sees every heartache, every need and every broken soul.
Life is given to everyone who seeks its fullness. Life however is not given to the faint-hearted or to those who lose hope.
I’ve survived CA for 11 years now. Doctors often tell me that the reality of CA is that it goes into remission but it comes back. My answer to them is always the same, “You don’t know my God!”
He said, “Ask and you shall receive. Seek and you shall find. “If you have faith even as small as a mustard seed, you can make mountains move.”
We must not allow the mists of disbelief to cover our sight. Miracles do happen. There is a Brigadoon for all of us.
