2 students, worker arrested for guns

THE Lapu-Lapu City Special Weapons and Tactics (Swat) team arrested two students and a factory worker at a checkpoint for illegal gun possession last Monday dawn.

The three were identified in the police report as Julius de la Cruz Ramirez, 19; Omar Cabahug Jumamoy, 23; and Rhich Mark Quiñopa, 22.

Ramirez is a customs 3rd year student at the University of Cebu while Jumamoy is a criminology student at the University of the Visayas. Both live in Barangay Labogon, Mandaue City, while Quiñopa, who is with Debon Exports, lives in Barangay Yati, Liloan, Cebu.

Checkpoint

Four Swat members were conducting a checkpoint at the Marcelo Fernan Bridge at 2:30 a.m. when they noticed the three men looking uneasy.

Their suspicion grew when the three turned around and sped off without passing through the checkpoint, so the team chased after them.

Ramirez was driving his motorcycle with Jumamoy and Quiñopa at the back.

Swat members finally caught up with them a few meters away and cautiously approached the motorcycle. Team member PO2 Ronan Andales saw a .22 magnum Derringer-type revolver inserted at the motorcycle back seat.

Denial

All the three denied owning the gun.

Yesterday inside the holding cell, Jumamoy and Ramirez pointed to Quiñopa as the gun owner.

In their affidavit, they quoted Quiñopa as admitting his guilt in front of Swat investigator.

Swat investigator PO3 Jacinto Mandal still charged the three with illegal possession of firearms.

It will be up to the court to decide who among the suspects is liable. (OCP)
