Bry. residents earn P500T from trash

IN JUST two years, waste segregation and recycling have earned for Barangay Luz residents over P500,000. The project also helped reduce the barangay’s waste by up to 25 percent.

Lawyer Gloria Estenzo-Ramos, chair of the Integrated Bar of the Philippines-National Environmental Action Team (IBP-Neat), lauded Luz barangay officials for the successful implementation of their waste management program.

She also urged other local government units to adopt measures through which they can implement waste segregation and other components of the Solid Waste Management Act.

Aside from keeping their surroundings clean, residents of the barangay were also able to convert their garbage into cash through the barangay’s “Kwarta Sa Basura Program” (KSBP).

The project is now being implemented in 24 other barangays in Cebu City.

“In two years, we were able to reduce our solid waste by 25 percent and at the same time, we were able to help our residents earn additional income and savings, which they can use for livelihood,” said Luz Barangay Councilor Nida Cabrera.

Cabrera introduced the project in her barangay in October 2002 in compliance with Republic Act 9003 or the Solid Waste Management Act.

Savings

Representatives of the City Council, the IBP-Neat and other barangays joined Luz residents in the second anniversary celebration of the KSBP at their barangay hall yesterday.

As of this month, some 700 members of the Barangay Luz Multi-Purpose Cooperative already have an accumulated savings of P551,000, which was derived from 183,000 kilos of garbage.

The Bayanihan Savings Replication Program, which complements the KSBP, allows the homeowners to sell their garbage to the cooperative, which in turn keeps the proceeds in the individual savings account of the homeowners.

After six months, the residents are allowed to withdraw their money or avail themselves of a loan for livelihood and other purposes, Cabrera said. (LCR)
