CCCI to push for fair probe on GSIS

THE Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) is asking for a fair investigation on the allegations hurled against Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) President and General Manager Winston Garcia.

It is set to issue a statement on this.

CCCI president Robert Go said that since Garcia had told them that he is being “systematically ousted” and being discriminated for being a Cebuano and for being a “sacred cow,” they are supporting the call for an independent probe on him.

“On that note, we are willing to support a call for a fair investigation. We don’t know if he is innocent or not. (But) he should be treated fairly,” Go told Sun.Star in a phone interview yesterday, a day after Garcia spoke to chamber members in a meeting in Cebu.

Go, however, said that they are yet to agree today if they will send the statement to President Arroyo or to the House of Representatives.

Last month, Iloilo Rep. Rolex Suplico and two other congressmen had filed a resolution for an investigation on Garcia for his failure to liquidate P5.2 million in cash advances.

Garcia then filed charges against Suplico with the Office of the Ombudsman for allegedly coercing a corporation to purchase P175-million lot owned by the congressman’s wife’s family.

Last Monday, Garcia told CCCI that the allegations against him are petty and urged everyone that he be judged according to the agency’s earnings and if he has been performing or not.

Go agreed that Garcia should be judged based on what he has done rather than attack his personality.

GSIS employees in Cebu have expressed support for their head, but their counterparts in Manila want Garcia removed from office. (CYR)
