Missed wins

DEFENDING champion Michelle bumgarner of M&M Racing and Marlon Stockinger of Birel-Fila foiled the double victory bid of Matteo Guidicelli yesterday in the penultimate leg of the 2004 PCSO Shell Superkarting Series at the Boom Na Boom Kart Trak inside the CCP Complex.

Actually, the stage was set for Guidicelli’s bid after ruling both the premiere Open Class and the Formula Rotax Max Juniors in the pre-final heat of this event, sanctioned by the Automobile Association of the Philippines and sponsored by the Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corp., Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office through Rosario Uriarte, Comglasco Aguila Glass, Bridgestone, Aviva Insurance, Eastway Motorcycle Racing and Denso Iridium Power.

But the tight, tricky 650-meter kart track proved advantageous for both Bumgarner and Stockinger to pull the out the winning aces up on their sleeves.

Bumgarner, who owns the track’s fastest record laptime of 30.028 seconds, kept pace in the early goings until she took a decisive dive at the tight curve to wrest the pole from Guidicelli on the sixth lap.

She held on to her post from thereon and wrapped up the 26-lap lap race in 18:09.181.

Though he could regain the pole if he wanted to, Guidicelli put safety concerns first over his desire to win as he checked in 0.423 seconds later.

“I could if I wanted to. But the track is too tight and I don’t want any accident to happen just to accomplish my goal,” said Guidicelli.

Rotax division

In the Rotax Max Juniors, Stockinger wasted no time as he quickly grabbed the front seat from Guidicelli on the third lap. Stockinger won the race in 14:21.183 to grab solo lead in the class.

Guidicelli checked in 6.867 seconds later for the runner-up finish.

Despite both setbacks, Guidicelli remains on top of the title race for Open class and the coveted Karter of the Year.
