CCCI could get P8M to boost Cebu tourism
CEBU can expect more help in developing its tourism potentials from the Canadian government through the Private Enterprise Accelerated Resource Linkages (Pearl) 2 project of the Canadian International Development Agency (Cida).
According to Restie Mali, program officer of the partnership development facility (PDF) component of Pearl 2, Cida is willing to allocate another P6 million to P8 million to help the Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) in its projects to improve Cebu’s tourism industry.
“The amount could go higher. The focus this time of Pearl 2’s assistance is tourism,” he said on the sidelines of the opening of the 3rd Regional Trade and Technology Fair (RTTF) 2004 at SM City Cebu trade hall last Friday.
The RTTF, organized by the CCCI, is one of the projects under the Business and Industry Growth (BIG) promotions of CCCI. BIG is financially supported by Pearl 2, with the international agency donating some P1.1 million.
The three-day RTTF brought together products of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the region such as fashion accessories, wearables, home furnishings, furniture, organics and natural products, marine products, fresh and processed foods, holiday decor, gift items and other related raw and semi-processed materials or products.
Mali said the chamber is now preparing the proposal for its next partnership with Pearl 2.
In a separate interview, CCCI president Robert Go said one of the activities included in the chamber’s proposal is its tourism promotions to China to attract the Chinese to come to the country.
“Tourism Secretary Ace Durano invited us to go with him in his official visit to China in November. We plan to accept the invitation,” he said.
The BIG project, which commenced in November last year, aims to support small and medium enterprises (SME) in their efforts to attain global competitiveness.
BIG also aims to continually enhance Cebu’s role as one of the trade and investment centers in the country and to continually create an environment conducive to the growth and development of SMEs.
Cida, through Pearl 2, hopes to contribute to the reduction of poverty in the Philippines through equitable and sustainable development by developing SMEs that create meaningful jobs for both men and women.
This can be achieved by strengthening business support organizations like the CCCI and the Cebu Educational Development for Information Technology, and investment promotion agencies like the Cebu Investment Promotions Center. JBN
