USP fails to upset USJ-R in Cesafi football finals By MIKE T. LIMPAG Sun.Star Correspondent
THIS time, the top seed lived to its billing and repulsed an aggressive underdog.
The University of San Jose-Recoletos extended its domination of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) football tournament after collaring its fourth straight crown with a 2-0 win over the University of Southern Philippines yesterday at the University of San Carlos-Technological Center field.
In the battle for third, the University of the Visayas banked on a second-half surge to turn back the University of Cebu, 3-1.
The final, likened to the Greece-Portugal Euro Cup final by USP coach Eleazar Toledo, started with the Jaguars showing USP who’s boss, harassing the defense and getting goalkeeper Paul Jalosjos to work early with a few saves.
USJ-R moved ahead after a looping cross from Restituto Colina found Mark Buglosa, who banged in the opener in the 12th minute.
USJ-R time and again got through the leaky USP defense but Jalosjos rose to the occasion, making three brilliant saves to keep USP in the match.
Chested in
A powerful 30-yarder by Jesus Menaling kissed the top of the bar, and with Jalosjos on the ground, Dave Intong chested it in for a 2-0 lead.
The Panthers took over the momentum but couldn’t get past keeper Oscar Lemence, who calmly staved off No-bushira Kawashita’s shot in the 30th. Kawashita again missed with a bicycle shot that hit the side bar in the 33rd.
It was the same story in the second half as USP kept on pushing but couldn’t find the back of the net.
Rolie Militante’s strike sailed wide, while another attempt flew a few inches off the bar.
The victory sealed the Jaguars fourth straight Cesafi crown and earned them the right to represent Cebu in the Regional Private Schools Athletic Association (Prisaa) meet in Dumaguete this December.
On the other hand, Junard Aguilar gave UV the lead in the 29th minute before Venjor Gomorra leveled the count in the 33rd for a 1-1 draw going into the second half.
In the final half, Elizer Pacubas handed the Greenbooters the go ahead goal in the 53rd and Frederick Alazas added the insurance in the 60th for the win.
